Height Color Tables

index end

I wanted, needed to find a set of colors that I could apply to a colored height map to 'show' a 3-sec DEM file, in this case N37W123.hgt (San Francisco), and wanted the colors 'related'. After several tries, came up with the following table of 26 entries -

In this search was influenced by the following Microsoft site http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb250466(VS.85).aspx. The second table shows what it calls an outside-to-inside perspective. At the end of this page the PNG image generated is shown, using the above table.

The Safety Palette Table 1: Top-to-Bottom Perspective

In this first table, I am simply listing all 216 colors that are part of the safety palette. Notice how the table blocks up very nicely into six 6x6 squares. Think of each square as a separate "slice" of the color cube described by the safety palette.

The Safety Palette Table 2: Outside-to-Inside Perspective

This second table shows the same colors, but has a slightly different structure. Instead of layering the colors from top to bottom, this version provides more of an outside-to-inside perspective. It might be a little more difficult to grasp the structure of the color cube from this version, but I find it easier to select related colors.
